Australian Coal Exports Decline 6% M-o-M in Feb’17

Australia, one of the largest coal exporters in the globe recorded 26.84 MnT total coal export in Feb’17.

According to the data collected by CoalMint logistics from vessel line updates on Australian coal exports, both metallurgical and thermal were down by 6.3% M-o-M in Feb’17 which were 28.66 MnT in Jan’17.

Coal exports have been falling since Dec’16, and have reached 26.84 MnT in Feb’17 from 34.66 MnT in Dec’16.

Out of the total exports, the country shipped majorly Coking coal and Steam Coal to different destinations. However, the country had witnessed fall in the exports of both the coal types in Feb’17.

Major Coal Export Destinations:
The country has been exporting more than 80% of coal to the top 5 export destinations every month. The top five coal importing countries in Feb’17 were Japan, China, Korea, India and Taiwan.

Japan remained the major coal importing nation of Australian Coal. Australia exported 8.70 MnT of coal to Japan in Feb’17, registered a downfall of 12% M-o-M against 9.93 MnT exported during Jan’17. The nation has exported around 31.45 MnT of coal in last 3 months to Japan.

China is the second largest importer, which acquired 5.66 MnT in Feb’17, registered a growth of 23% M-o-M against 4.59 MnT in Jan’17. Australia has exported 16.78 MnT of coal in last 3 months to China.

Exports to Korea have decreased marginally by 1% M-o-M in Feb’17. Australia exported 2.98 MnT to Korea in Feb’17, registered a fall of 1% M-o-M against 3 MnT exported in Jan’17. Australia has exported around 9 MnT of coal in the last 3 months to Korea.

Port-wise Shipments in Feb’17:
Port of New Castle, is the largest cargo port of Australia which shipped the highest quantity about 11.19 MnT of coal to different destinations in Feb’17, followed by DBCT and Gladstone as the 2nd and 3rd largest coal delivery ports in Feb’17.

Port of New Castle and Port Kembla largely shipped steam coal to different destinations. While, rest of the ports largely shipped coking coal.
