Australian Coal Exports at 29.9 MnT in Nov’16

Australia, one of the largest coking coal exporters in the globe recorded 29.9 MnT total coal export in Nov’16.

Australian coal exports, both metallurgical and thermal were at 29.9 MnT in Nov’16 with a marginal fall by about 6.7% which was 32 MnT compared to Nov’15. As per SteelMint logistics (vessel line up updates).

Out of the total exports, the country shipped more than 50% Steam coal to different destinations and rest quantity comprises Hard coking, Semi Soft coking, other metallurgical and Anthracite coal.

Port-wise Shipments in Nov’16
Port of New Castle, the largest cargo port of Australia shipped the highest quantity about 12.5 MnT to different destinations in Nov’16, followed by Gladstone and DBCT as the 2nd and 3rd largest coal delivery ports in Nov’16.

Port of New Castle and Port Kembla largely shipped steam coal to different destinations. While, rest of the ports largely shipped coking coal.

Major Coal Export Destinations Nov’16
The country has been exporting more than 85% of coal to the top 5 export destinations every year such as Japan, China, Korea, India and Taiwan.

Japan is one of the largest buyers of Australian coal, out of the total yearly export, the country shipped about 30% of coal to Japan. In Nov’16, Japan imported about 9 MnT coal; Down by 12% compared to Nov’15.

China, the second-largest coal importer imported about 6.8 MnT coal in Nov’16. The country’s yearly import from Australia recorded a growth of 17%, which was 5.8 MnT in Nov’15.

Taiwan, the third-largest coal importer from Australia imported about 3.2 MnT coal during Nov’16, recorded a drop by 5%, compared to Nov’15.

Australian coal shipments have been rising constantly in 2016 since Sep’15 on the wake of increased crude steel production and coal demand globally. Collectively Coking coal prices are also climbing up in the global market driven by sudden rise in Chinese coal demand. Current offers for premium coking coal crossed the level of USD 298 /MT, FoB for Dec’16 shipment.
