Australia: South32 Records Lower Coking Coal Production in Apr-Jun’17

The Australian coal major—South32—recorded a 33.3% lower Coking Coal production during the fourth quarter of the fiscal that ended on 30Jun’17 against the same period of the preceding fiscal.

During the Apr-Jun’17 period, South32 had produced 1.4 MnT of Coking Coal from 2.1 MnT in the Apr-Jun’16 period.

The company attributed the lower production during the quarter to the suspension of production at its Appin mine due to gas leakages.

High levels of gas concentrations had disrupted the mining operations on numerous occasions since mid-2016, resulting in the drop in the production.

In the meantime, Coking Coal production at the Illawarra Metallurgical Coal Appin Colliery remains suspended as a comprehensive review of the system operations and processes is being undertaken.
