The largest iron ore exporter Australia has exported 810.76 MnT iron ore in 2016, according to the trade data released by Australian Customs. Y-o-Y increase of 6% was recorded in iron ore exports over 768.32 MnT last year from Australia.
In Dec’16, Australian iron ore exports were up by 7% M-o-M as it was 70.11 MnT in Nov’16. Similarly, exports have also moved up by 11% for the month of Dec as it was 67.53 MnT in Dec’15.
The non-agglomerated iron ore (lumps and fines) import in 2016 was registered at 808.12 MnT over 766.09 MnT in 2015. In Dec’16, exports for the type of material were registered at 74.77 MnT, up by 7% M-o-M and 11% Y-o-Y compared with Dec’15.
The agglomerated ore (pellets and concentrate) import was registered at 2.65 MnT in 2016 against 2.23 MnT in 2015. In Dec’16, exports were registered at 0.30 MnT, up by 86% M-o-M and an equal increase of 86% compared with Dec’15.
China imports 82% material for two years in a row for 2015 and 16 from Australia’s annual export
China continues to be the largest importer of Australian iron ore. In 2016, China imported 668.48 MnT iron ore against 628.09 MnT in 2015.In Dec’16; the country imported 62.92 MnT iron ore against 56.82 MnT in Nov’16. In Dec’15, the country has imported 56.58 MnT iron ore.
Japan imports half of the balance material exported by Australia after slicing China’s share, equaling its previous year’s ratio at 9%
Japan imported 2% more iron ore at 71.93 MnT and remained second largest importer from Australia. The country imported 70.47 iron ore last year.
Republic of Korea at 48.34 MnT and Taiwan at 17.02 MnT remained the third and fourth largest importers from Australia respectively for the year 2016. Korea imported 5% less material while Taiwan increased the import by 12% over 2015 figures.
Indonesia saw an increase of 28% in import from Australia at 3.57 MnT while Singapore imported 0.73 MnT iron ore with 35% hike from previous year.
