Australia iron ore export shipments fall marginally in Aug’20

Australia – world’s largest iron ore exporter has recorded iron ore export shipment at 72.1 mn t for Aug’20, down slightly as against 72.4 mn t in July’20, according to the vessel line up data maintained with SteelMint. The shipments fell amid 14 day quarantine requirement at many ports in Australia accompanied with fall in Chinese imports due to port congestion.

On a yearly basis too, exports shipments in Aug’20 dropped against 75.5 mnt in Aug’19.

Monthly average global iron ore fines (Fe 62%) price increased significantly by 14% to $122/t, CFR China in Aug’20 against that in last month at $107/t, CFR China.

Australian exports to China down 3% in Aug’20

China marked the largest importer of Australian iron ore for the month of Aug at 60.5 mnt, down 3% against 62.3 mnt in July’20. South Korea stood as the second-largest importer for the month at 4.7 mnt (down 4% m-o-m) followed by Japan at 4.5 mnt.

Australian export shipments to India continue to record nil for the month. The export to India was last witnessed on Mar’19 at 185,000 t.

Port Hedland accounted for 64% of exports in Aug

In Aug’20, Port Hedland exported 46.2 mnt of iron ore, up 5% against 43.8 mnt in July 20. Walcott stood second-largest exporter at 15 mnt, followed by Dampier at 9.4 mnt and Geraldton at 0.8 mnt.
