Australia – world’s largest iron ore exporter has recorded fall in export shipments in Jan’18. According to the vessel line up data maintained with SteelMint, Australia’s iron ore export shipments declined by 12% M-o-M to 69.79 MnT in Jan’18 compared to 79.31 MnT in Dec’17. Falling iron ore demand from Australia’s largest importer – China, resulted in fall in Australia shipment volumes. Furthermore, Australian govt expects 20% iron ore price drop in 2018 , amid reduced Chinese iron ore demand.
The Y-o-Y Australian exports witnessed a marginal increase of 4% in Jan’18 as against 66.98 MnT in Jan’17.
China’s iron ore imports from Australia down 12% in Jan’18:
China continued to record highest imports from Australia in Jan’18 with 83% of total share. However, it depicted a decline of 12% M-o-M in imports and stood at 57.83 MnT in Jan’18 as against 65.90 MnT in Dec’17. China’s iron ore imports from Australia stood lowest in last seven months.
Japan stood the second highest importer of Australian iron ore in Jan’18 with 9% share, down 6% M-o-M to 6.39 MnT as against 6.83 MnT in Dec’17, followed by Korea at 2.97 MnT and Taiwan at 1.49 MnT.
Iron ore export shipments from Australia to India recorded at 0.28 MnT in Jan’18, up 45% M-o-M.

Port-wise Australia iron ore export for Jan’18:
Hedland was largest iron ore exporting port from Australia with 59% share in Jan’18 iron ore export shipments. Exports from Port Hedland were down 9% M-o-M to 41.12 MnT in Jan’18 against 45.04 MnT in Dec’17, followed by Walcott with 23% share (down 17% M-o-M) to 15.80 MnT in Jan’18.
