Australian Coal Shipments

Australia: Coal Shipments Down 8% M-o-M in Jan’18

According to the vessel line-up data compiled by CoalMint Research, coal shipments from Australia have fell 8% on the month to 30.86 MnT in Jan’18 against 33.51 MnT in Dec’17. On the yearly basis, shipments were still 8% higher than the levels seen in Jan’17.

The decline in monthly coal shipments was largely attributed to the weak buying from its chief consumers- China and India.

China’s coal import was down 29% M-o-M to 5.96 MnT in Jan’18, compared with 8.36 MnT in Dec’17. Also, India had received 3.82 MnT coal during the month, which was 17% lower from the previous month’s import of 4.58 MnT.

Both these countries had previously received their respective highest coal shipments from Australia in Dec’17, so as to stock sufficient coal prior to the New Year Holidays.

Japan remained the highest coal importer during the month. The country had witnessed a growth of 6% in coal shipments from Australia to 10.93 MnT in Jan’17 against 10.28 MnT in Dec’17.
