According to the Vessel line-up data compiled by CoalMinT Research, Coal Shipments from Australia had fallen 7% on the month to 28.76 MnT in Feb’18, against 30.86 MnT in Jan’18.
Coal exports from Australia was affected due to logistic issues and bad weather during Feb’18, but were still maintained 7% higher on the year compared with the export of 26.79 MnT coal, reported in Feb’17.
Amongst the major coal exporting ports, only Gladstone and Brisbane port had witnessed increase in exports during the month.
Newcastle port had discharged the highest coal shipments during the month, but exports from the port was down 2% M-o-M to 11.95 MnT in Feb’18 compared with 12.18 MnT in Jan’18.
As a result of heavy Rainfall in Australia’s Queensland region, the Goonyella rail system was shut down for 12 hours on 21 Feb’18 for maintenance. Consequently, coal exports from the Queensland region via the port terminals DBCT, Abbot Point and Hay point was impacted.
DBCT had recorded 20% fall in export to 5.47 MnT in Feb’18, also export from Hay Point and Abbot Point coal terminals were also down on the monthly basis.

Quantity in MnT
Major Coal Importers:
Japan remained the largest coal importer in Feb’18; the country had received coal shipments of 9.26 MnT, down 17% from 11.15 MnT in Jan’18.
Chinese coal imports had increased 4% M-o-M to 6.21 MnT in Feb’18 compared with 5.96 MnT in Jan’18. South Korea was the third-largest coal importer in Feb’18, with imports of 3.81 MnT coal during the month.
Indian coal imports fell by 17% on the month, and had recorded 3-month’s lowest total of 3.4 MnT in Feb’18.
