Australia, the largest coal exporter in the world witness decrease in their monthly exports. Monthly exports have fallen by 5% in Feb’17 to 28.49 MnT compared with 30.04 MnT in Jan’17, as per Data released by Australian Customs.
Monthly exports in Feb’17 were approximately the same as the quantity exported in Feb’16. Australia had exported 28.49 MnT in Feb’16; hence not much change was recorded on the yearly basis.
Grade-wise Exports in Feb’17:
Australia majorly exports Steaming coal, which accounts for half of the total coal exports from the country, along with Hard coking coal, Semi-soft Coking Metallurgical coal, Pet Coke, Anthracite and Briquettes.
However during Jan’17-Feb’17, only Steaming coal, Hard coking coal and Semi-soft Coking Metallurgical coal was exported by Australia.
While Steaming coal and Hard Coking coal exports fell in Feb’17, Semi-soft coking coal exports have risen by 18% M-o-M.

Major Importing Countries:
Japan remained the top coal importing nation from Australia however; imports have fallen by 14% M-o-M in Feb’17. Japan imported 8.92 MnT in Feb’17 against 10.40 MnT in Jan’17.
China second-largest coal exporter saw a marginal drop in their monthly imports by 1% M-o-M to 5.61 MNT in Feb’17. However, Imports have significantly risen by 38% M-o-M compared with 4.06 MnT in Feb’16.
Korea, the third-largest coal importer, recorded growth by 10% M-o-M to 4.06 MnT in Feb’17. While Yearly imports fell by 9% Y-o-Y.
