Australia Coal Export Down 0.69% M-o-M in Sep’18

Coal shipments exported from Australia fell by 0.69% in Sep’18 on a month-to-month basis, as per the vessel line-up data compiled by CoalMint Research.

Australian coal exports totaled 30.94 MnT in the month of Sep’18, against 31.16 MnT in Aug’18.

On a year-on-year basis, Australia’s Sep’18 coal exports have decreased by 2.29% in comparison to 31.67 MnT of exports in Sep’17.

Major Coal Importers:

Japan remained the largest receiver of Australian coal in Sep’18, followed by China, India and South Korea— these four nations together accounted for nearly three-fourths of Australia’s total coal shipments during the month under review.

However, Japanese coal import from Australia fell by 13.7% to 8.69 MnT in Sep’18, compared with 10.07 MnT in Aug’18.

Chinese coal import from Australia rose by 10.3% to 7.51 MnT in Sep’18, compared with 6.81 MnT in Aug’18.

India replaced South Korea to become the third-largest Australian coal importer during the month of Sep’18.

Indian coal import from Australia, however, decreased by 7.1% to 3.60 MnT in Sep’18, compared with 3.87 MnT in Aug’18.

Newcastle sustained its leadership position as the largest coal handling port of Australia in Sep’18; however, coal export shipments from the port fell by 8.1% M-o-M to 11.73 MnT in Sep’18, compared with 12.76 MnT in Aug’18.

DBCT, Gladstone, Hay Point and Abbot Point were the other major coal handling ports in Aug’18.
