ASEAN-6 steel consumption up 1.2% in CY19

Apparent steel consumption in the ASEAN-6 countries reached 81 mn t in 2019, up 1.2% on year, with the increase mainly coming from flat steel use, Yeoh Wee Jin, Secretary General of South East Asia Iron & Steel Institute (SEAISI), revealed at the 2020 SEAISI e-Conference on June 30.

In 2019, consumption of flat steel among the ASEAN-6 increased by 3.2% on year to 41.8 mn t while consumption of long steel remained largely unchanged, down 0.8% on year at 39.2 mn t, due to a slowdown in construction in some countries in the region, according to Yeoh. The ASEAN-6 comprise Indonesia, Malaysia, Philippines, Singapore, Thailand and Vietnam.
