Anthracite Coal Offers Stable, Imports Rise 81% M-o-M in Mar’17

Anthracite Coal offers have remained stable at the week ago rates, but upward movements are expected in the coming days as prices of Coking Coal are up-swinging.

The latest offer for Anthracite Coal is assessed at USD 140/MT CFR India, unchanged from that in the last week.

Demand for the coal has remained sluggish in India as buyers preferred alternate fuels. Moreover, there is no indication for the market to improve in the country in the future.

IMPORTS

There has been no affinity for Anthracite Coal imports among buyers in the country on account of the lackluster market atmosphere.

In Mar’17, 152,100 MT of Anthracite Coal was imported into India, according to data compiled by CoalMint Research. The import quantity was 81.07% higher than the imports of 84,000 MT in Feb’17.

On a year-on-year comparison, Anthracite Coal imports into India in FY17 were 58.34% higher than the imports in FY16. According to CoalMint Research, 1,005,300 MT of the coal was imported during FY17 against 634,900 MT in the previous fiscal.

During Mar’17, the majority of the imports came from Russia, followed by that from Latvia.

Among the ports in the country, the Paradip port had handled the highest volume of the imports during the month under review; followed by the Dharamtar and Vizag ports.

The importers during the month were: Tata Steel, Essar Steel, Bengal Energy, Jindal Steel and Power Limited, and JSW.
