Alert: Indian Supreme Court orders Suspension of Iron Ore Mining Operations in Odisha

Indian Supreme Court orders suspension of Iron ore mining operations on 26 mines operating under 2nd deemed renewal (or more) in the state of Odisha, until next hearing is conducted.

This is an interim order by the Supreme Court. The apex court has asked Odisha government to take a call on mines running under 2nd deemed renewal, within six months. Odisha is India’s largest Iron ore producing state with contribution of 50% of India’s total output.

  • Supreme Court has enforced suspension of mining operation on 26 mines running under 2nd (or more) deemed renewal
  • The Court has granted 6 months time to Odisha government to decide on mining license renewals
  • The Court has allowed 14 Iron ore mines operating after 1st renewal to continue operation
  • 16 mines that have already been granted leases will operate
  • 102 mines with no environment clearances will not operate
  • 29 mines with rejected or expired environment clearances will not operate until they receive it 
  • Next hearing may be conducted during August 2014
  • According to Sponge Iron manufacturers based in Chhattisgarh,“230 trading licenses have been suspended due to non compliance because of which Iron ore procurement has become difficult and will impact Sponge iron manufacturers in a big way”

  • Indian Iron ore prices may perhaps shoot up over shortfall
  • Iron Pellet manufacturers across India may well raise prices for domestic buyers
  • Steel/Sponge Iron  mills based in the states of Odisha and West Bengal will be impacted in a large way
