The Coal Ministry of the Government of India (GoI) has initiated steps to address the recent issue of inadequacy of coal at the thermal power plants in the Tamil Nadu state. According to the information received, the state-run Coal India Limited (CIL) will from now on supply more rakes of coal to the thermal power plants in the state those with shortage of coal.
The coal shortage in the power plants in the state has aroused in the wake of the spurt in thermal power demand rising suddenly on account of shortage in the hydro and nuclear power generation in the state. Due to the shortage in coal supply, 810 MW of power generation capacity at the North Chennai Thermal Power Station, 630 MW at the Tuticorin Thermal Power Station and 630 MW at the Mettur Thermal Power Station in the state have been put on hold.
The domestic coal production was impacted by the recent monsoon, and with the weather improving, the coal output in the country will gather speed and the inadequacy in the supply is expected to ease.
Thermal power plants in Tamil Nadu are supplied with coal from the Mahanadi Coalfields Limited, Central Coalfields Limited and Eastern Coalfields Limited.
