According to the customs data, Taiwan coal imports were higher on the year on year basis for the fourth successive month in Aug’17, as imports were up 16% to 6.29 MnT in comparison with 5.41 MnT in Aug’16.However, Imports had suffered a minor drop of 1% M-o-M compared with 6.33 MnT in Jul’17.
Total coal imports during the first 8 months of CY17 (Jan’17-Aug’17) has rose to 48.02 MnT, with an increase of 11% Y-o-Y compared with 43.41 MnT in Jan’16-Aug’16 period.
Grade-wise Coal Imports:
Imports of Bituminous coal witnessed a minor fall of 0.33% M-o-M to 6.08 MnT in Aug’17, but still had 96% share in country’s total coal imports.
Met Coke, Pet Coke and Anthracite coal were also imported in small quantities during the month.

Quantity in MnT
Major Coal Exporters:
Australia was the major coal exporter in Aug’17, with the country supplying more than half of the total coal exports during the month.
Exports from Australia rose 16% M-o-M to 3.42 MnT in Aug’17, which was the highest monthly coal shipment, recorded in CY17. Besides, Exports were also 15% higher on the year compared with 2.98 MnT in Aug’16.
Indonesian coal exports were up 19% M-o-M to 1.8 MnT in Aug’17, compared with 1.51 MnT in Jul’17. Also, exports had increased 22% Y-o-Y compared with 1.48 MnT in Aug’16.
Russian coal export was 0.5 MnT in Aug’17, down 43% M-o-M. On the Y-o-Y basis, exports fell 32% compared to 0.74 MnT in Aug’16.
South Africa, US, Canada and Mozambique were the other major coal exporters during the month.
