India:Petcoke Imports Shrink 32% in Sep’17 M-o-M on Supply Disruption

Petcoke imports in India in Sep’17 had shrunk by 32.26% over the imports during the previous month, an analysis on the import data collected by CoalMint Research shows. The shrinkage in the imports aroused due to the supply availability in the key international markets drying up aftermath the occurrence of the Harvey hurricane in Texas of USA in late Aug’17, leaving a trail of devastation behind.

Most refineries in USA had suspended operations, declaring force majeure on exports, in recovering from the devastation. The cut-off of the exports from USA had shifted the global demand towards the other Petcoke exporting nation—Saudi Arabia, as such exports from the Middle Eastern country had exhausted.

According to the information received, the exports from the two key international markets will resume from the beginning of Nov’17.

During Sep’17, around 0.84 MnT of Petcoke was imported in India and that was lower than the imports of around 1.24 MnT in Aug’17. It is to be noted that the imports pertained to the bookings in Aug’17.

A break-up of the countries of import reveal that the imports from both USA and Saudi Arabia were down during the month under consideration.

Among the various ports in India, the Kandla port had handled the highest volume of import traffic during the month under review; followed by the Bhavnagar and Krishnapatnam ports.

The imports will decline significantly for Oct’17 due to the supply disruption in the key international markets.
