Thailand Ferrous Scrap Imports Increase in CY17

The recent custom statistics maintained with SteelMint shows that Thailand has raised its scrap imports by 6% Y-o-Y during Jan-Jul’17. The country imported 0.67 MnT ferrous scrap during Jan-Jul’17 against 0.63 MnT in the same time span last year.

However on monthly premises, in Jul’17 Thailand ferrous scrap imports have come down by 46% from 0.13 MnT in Jun’17 to 0.07 MnT in Jul’17.

The key scrap supplier to Thailand during first five months of this year was United States which accounted for 39% share (0.26 MnT) in Thailand ferrous scrap imports. Other major suppliers of ferrous scrap to Thailand during Jan-Jul’17 were Australia (6%), New Zealand (6%), Japan (4%), Phillipines (4%) and South Korea (4%).

Thailand’s crude steel output is expected to have grown by 4% Y-o-Y to 2.31 MnT during Jan-Jul’17 compared to 2.22 MnT in the same time frame last year.

Thailand steel industry is majorly dominated by rolling mills and most of them make use of electric arc furnace route thus making the country a major scrap consumer.

Thailand is also one of the major steel importer and imports flat steel, long steel and semi-finished steel too. Few of the major steel producers in Thailand include G Steel, Tata Steel Thailand, Sahaviriya Steel Industries PLC.
