Australia is the largest coal exporter in the world, however in terms of Non-coking coal exports the country is ranked second behind Indonesia . Australia had exported 198.16 MnT Non-coking coal in CY16.
According to the vessel line-up data compiled by CoalMint Research, Australia’s monthly Non-coking coal export in Jul’17 was recorded the highest in CY17. Non-coking coal export has increased 18% M-o-M to 15.35 MnT in Jul’17, compared with 13 MnT in Jun’17.
About 14.73 MnT Non-coking coal was exported from Newcastle port, while Port Kemble had handled the remaining coal shipment of 0.62 MnT during Jul’17.
During the first 7 months of CY17 (Jan’17-Jul’17), Australia has exported 96.99 MnT Non-coking coal, which accounts for 48% of the total coal exports of 203.47 MnT during the period.
Major Coal Importers:
Japan remained major Non-coking coal importer in Jul’17, followed by Taiwan, China, South Korea and Thailand.
Japan coal imports increased 9% M-o-M to 6.76 MnT in Jul’17, compared with 6.18 MnT in Jun’17.
Taiwan raised their monthly coal imports from Australia by 186% M-o-M, to become the second-largest Non-coking coal importer in Jul’17.
China, the third-largest Non-coking coal importer, had received 1.75 MnT coal during the month.

Surge in Australian Coal Prices:
Australian Non-coking coal prices have risen abruptly due to continued strike activities at Glencore’s Hunter Valley coal mine.
The growing protests caused supply tightness of 6000 NAR coal, as a result, Newcastle coal index has reached USD 95 for Aug’17 this week. While spot offer of 6000 NAR coal was assessed at USD 97-98/MT, FoB Newcastle.
