South Korea, world’s fourth-largest coal importer, has witnessed growth in coal imports during the first half of 2017. The country has imported 74.16 MnT during Jan’17-Jun’17 against 68.16 MnT coal imported during Jan’16-Jun’16, according to the customs data.
South Korea had imported 141.42 MnT coal in CY16.
Coal imports have also increased by 13% M-o-M to 12.75 MnT in Jun’17 compared with 11.33 MnT in May’17. Moreover, imports in Jun’17 were 18% higher than the amount of coal imported during Jun’16.

Grade-wise Coal Imports in H1 CY17:
Imports of Non Coking coal and coking coal have increased in H1 CY17. Anthracite and Pet coke imports have fallen during the same period.
Non Coking coal imports rose 20% Y-o-Y to 53.29 MnT during Jan’17-Jun’17, while Coking coal imports increased 5% Y-o-Y.
Imports of Met coke have remained unchanged during H1 CY17.

Quantity in MnT
Major Coal Exporters in H1 CY17:
Australia remained the top coal exporter to South Korea during Jan’17-Jun’17 period. However, Exports from Australia has declined 21% Y-o-Y to 22.52 MnT in H1 CY17 compared with 28.33 MnT in H1 CY16.
Indonesia was the second-largest coal importer in H1 CY17. Country’s exports have increased marginally from 19.51 MnT in H1 CY16 to 19.78 MnT in H1 CY16.
Russia, third-largest coal exporter, also recorded an increase of 19% Y-o-Y.
Coal exports from South Africa and Colombia have surged during the year. Export from South Africa increased from 0.16 MnT to 4.32 MnT in H1 CY17, while exports from Colombia rise from 0.16 MnT to 2.43 MnT during the year.
