South Africa: Coal Exports Up 19% Mo-M in May’17

South African coal exports has increased 19% M-o-M to 7.52 MnT in May’17. The country had exported 6.33 MnT coal in Apr’17, according to the data provided by South African customs.

On the yearly basis, coal exports have increased 13% compared with 6.68 MnT in May’16.

During the first 5 months of 2017 (Jan’17-May’17), total export volume stood 33.37 MnT which is 8% higher than 30.84 MnT coal exported by South Africa during the same period in 2016.

Grade-wise Coal Exports:
South Africa has majorly exported Bituminous coal during the month along with very small quantity of Met coke.

Exports of Bituminous coal have increased 21% M-o-M to 7.51 MnT in May’17.

Quantity in MnT

Major Coal Importers:
India remained the major coal importer of South African coal in May’17. India has received 3.89 MnT coal during the month, with an increase of 11% M-o-M compared with 3.51 MnT during Apr’16.

However, on the yearly basis, Indian import of African coal has fallen by 14% compared with 4.53 MnT in May’16.

Coal Imported by India has been progressively increasing since Jan’17, yet the total coal quantity imported in 2017 is lower than that in 2016.

During Jan’17-May’17, India has imported 14.79 MnT South African coal, down by 21% Y-o-Y compared with 18.72 MnT imported during Jan’16-May’16, indicating reduction in coal imports as the country is focusing more on domestic coal consumption.

Pakistan was the second-largest coal importer. The country imported around 1 MnT in May’17 against 0.98 MnT in Apr’17. Also, imports have increased 117% Y-o-Y compared with 0.46 MnT in May’16.

Taiwan, third-largest coal importer from South Africa, has also recorded growth in monthly coal imports by 103% to 0.61 MnT in May’17.
