A country-wise break-up of Coking Coal imports in India during May’17 reveals an interesting fact—the imports from Canada were 13-month high—that also subtly indicate the changing purchasing preferences among the buyers in the country.
Data collected by CoalMint Research shows that imports of the coal in India in May’17 were remarkably high at 0.33 MnT, which not only overtook the import volume in Apr’17 but also the monthly import volumes during the last 12 months.

The abrupt surge in the imports could be attributed to the Indian buyers tending to diversify their import countries as relying solely on Australia often leads to confronting with supply disruptions. In the global scale, Japanese steel makers are mulling importing the coal from also from countries other than Australia to guard against sharp volatility in the prices on supply disruptions every now and then in Australia.
