Turkey: Coal Imports Down 40% M-o-M in Apr’17

Turkey, one of the major coal importers in the globe, witnessed a downfall of 40% in their monthly coal imports. Coal imports into the country fell from 3.85 MnT in Mar’17 to 2.33 MnT in Apr’17.

Coal imports also have fallen 21% Y-o-Y compared with 2.95 MnT in Apr’16, according to the trade data released by Turkish Customs.

Turkey has lowered its coal import volume in 2017. The country has received 12.74 MnT coal during Jan’17-Apr’17 against 13.12 MnT imported during the corresponding period of the previous year.

Grade-wise Coal Imports:
Turkey mainly imports Bituminous coal, which accounts for more than 80% of the total imports.

However, In Apr’17, the share of Bituminous coal was just over 55% of the total coal imports. Imports of bituminous coal were down by 56% M-o-M to 1.34 MnT in Apr’17.

On the other hand, imports of coking coal increased four-fold to 0.72 MnT during the month.

Met coke imports recorded significant downfall in Apr’17, as the country imported negligible amount of met coke during the month against 0.11 MnT imported during Mar’17.

Major Exporting Countries:
Colombia remained major coal exporter to Turkey followed by Russia, USA, Australia and Mozambique.

Export from Colombia decreased by 60% M-o-M to 0.72 MnT in Apr’17. Exports also fell by 46% Y-o-Y compared with 1.33 MnT in Apr’16.

Russia, second-largest coal exporter, supplied 0.71 MnT coal in Apr’17.Exports decreased on the monthly basis compared with 1.05 MnT in Mar’17. However, on the yearly basis, exports rose by 13% compared with 0.62 MnT in Apr’16.

USA, third-largest exporter also recorded fall in their monthly exports.

While, Australia, the chief source for Coking coal needs of Turkey, saw exports increasing by 102% M-o-M to 0.19 MnT in Apr’17.
