In a striking non-conformity, coal imports in Bangladesh shrunk remarkably in May’17 over the previous months in the current year.
According to the data sourced by CoalMint Research from Bangladesh Customs, only 6,900 MT of coal was imported in that country in May’17; and the import volume was notably lower by 84.3% against the imports in Apr’17.

The import data also reveals that coal imports in Bangladesh were falling during the last three successive months. During Apr’17 and Mar’17, coal imports in that country were at: 44,000 MT and 255,570 MT respectively.
Exploring the cause behind the downward trend it was elicited that the declining coal imports were due to the brick makers lessening their purchase as they had enough coal stocks at their disposal. However, their purchases are likely to resume soon, triggering more imports.
