Jindal Steel to Start Selling Granulated Pig Iron from New Furnace

Jindal Steel & Power Ltd (JSPL) has recently commissioned its 6 MnT steel plant at Angul (Odisha) with the largest blast furnace of 4554 cubic metres.

According to the officials, the steel mill will also produce granulated pig iron by Mid of Jun’17. This is produced by solidifying hot metal in cooling water. The end use of it includes electric arc furnaces, induction furnaces, basic oxygen furnaces and foundries as a replacement of pig iron, scrap or DRI. Its inherent properties lead to better yield, higher productivity and lower energy cost.

Currently Tata steel is supplying granulated pig iron in the name of Ferroshots and it is getting popular in Indian and global market. Although, Jindal steel has not started offering it in the merchant market and it is expected to be cheaper than pig iron.

Currently, India produces around 9-10 MnT of pig iron (steel and foundry both), out of which 5-6 million tonnes is used by induction and electric arc furnaces. With increase availability of granulated pig iron, supply and demand dynamics may change marginally for sponge and pig iron manufacturers.
