Mozambique: New Coal Port Terminal to be Operational from Friday

Coal exports from Mozambique will increase further as a new coal port terminal for exporting coal will be operational from Friday (12May’17).

A newly built coal terminal, at the port of Nacala-a-Velha in the Nampula province of Mozambique, will be operational from Friday. The terminal will handle coal mined at the Moatize mine, situated in the Tete Province of that country, by linking the mine to the Indian Ocean.

Construction of the coal terminal alongwith the associated rail line started in 2012, entailing a investment of USD 4.5 billion.

With the commencement of operations of the coal terminal, the coal export target from the associated port will rise to 18 MnT per year from the current target of 6.5 MnT per year. The mine produces both Coking and Non Coking Coal, and the produce is normally exported to Brazil, China and Japan.

As a matter of fact, there has been a growing tendency among Indian buyers to import Coking Coal from Mozambique, which somewhat acts as an alternate market for Australia.
