South Africa: TPT’s Operations Interrupted over Service Facility Changeover

Transnet Port Terminals (TPT) operations are disrupted as a result of the change-over of old to new material handling services.

Transnet Port Terminals (TPT), engaged in coal handling operations at RBCT carried out the change-over to new materials handling service on 8 May’17 at 6:00 AM South African Standard Time(SAST).

However, things went wrong during the process affecting all ports operations. In order to fix the problem, Officials from TPT have contacted the service providers to ensure that the matter is resolved as soon as possible.

TPT officials have also implemented the Business Continuity process to resume work speedily, a Command Centre has also been set up to closely monitor the situation.

Current Situation at RBCT:
According to the sources, all security entrances/ railway crossings on the East side of the ports are now blocked off and those with office space in the ports have not got any access.

Main security gate on West side got blocked off by RADDS equipment and protestors.The only access to the port is through the RBCT gate, however with limited access to the western port side.

The situation at ports gone out of control, as police could not manage to remove the RADDS protestors.

As a consequence, Coal export and storage operation were not carried out last night.

The significance of RBCT:
Richards Bay Coal Terminal (RBCT) is one of the leading coal export terminals in the world. Established in 1976, RBCT has grown into an advanced 24-hours operation facility with designed coal handling capacity of 91 MnT per annum.

RBCT majorly handle exports of South African thermal coal. About 5.50 MnT Non-Coking coal was exported from RBCT in Apr’17, as per the preliminary data gathered by CoalMint Research.
