Thermal coal imports in India increased slightly, however, yearly imports fell in the month of Apr’17.
Indian imports of Non-Coking coal increased from 13.84 MnT in Mar’17 to 13.85 MnT in Apr’17. Total Indian Coal Imports stood at 18.15 MnT (excluding Pet Coke imports) in Apr’17, according to the data collected by CoalMint Research.
Thermal coal imports were on the rise during Mar-Apr’17, as Indian buyers looked to stock coal before the oncoming monsoon, as many ports operation would be halted during the rainy season.
However, Yearly imports have fallen by 7% Y-o-Y compared with 14.93 MnT in Apr’16. The fall in coal imports shows the reduction in demand for imported coal, as Indian buyers preferred to utilise cheap domestic coal supplied by CIL.
