Bangladesh has lowered their coal demand as seen from their declining monthly imports.
Bangladesh Coal imports have fallen by 83% M-o-M to 0.04 MnT compared with 0.26 MnT in Mar’17. Coal imports have remarkably fallen from 0.46 MnT in Feb’17 to 0.04 MnT in Apr’17.
Imports have also fallen by 64% Y-o-Y compared with 0.12 MnT in Apr’16, as per the data collected by CoalMint Research and Bangladesh Customs.
Coal Imports in FY17:
Bangladesh has reduced their coal imports in the current fiscal year FY17 which started from Jul’16 and will end on Jun’17.
During the first 10 months of this fiscal (Jul’16-Apr’17), the country has imported around 2 MnT coal down by 33% Y-o-Y compared with 3 MnT imported during the corresponding period of the previous year.

Energy Demand in Bangladesh:
Although Coal imports have fallen in the current fiscal yet coal is an important source to meet the per capita electricity consumption in Bangladesh as only 62% of the total population has access to electricity.
Bangladesh is not willing to import coal from India; however, the country is planning to increase its electricity imports from India. Recently, Bangladesh Government had approved the import of electricity from the 1600 MW plant being set-up by Adani group in Jharkhand.
Major Exporting Countries:
Indonesia is the major coal exporter to Bangladesh. Mozambique, South Africa, Australia and India also supplies coal shipments to Bangladesh.
However, During Apr’17, Bangladesh has received coal from Indonesia only. Indonesia supplied the total coal shipment of 0.04 MnT to Bangladesh in Apr’17.
