NLC Puts Overseas Acquisition on Hold after Acquiring Domestic Coal Blocks

NLC Limited has postponed any prospects of acquiring overseas acquisition of coal assets after securing three coal blocks.

NLC limited previously known as Neyveli Lignite Corporation (NLC) is a Navratna Company inferred by Government of India.The Company is engaged in mining of lignite in the state of Tamil Nadu. Apart from coal mining, NLC Limited has also stepped into Power generation in order to add to its diversified business portfolio.

Ministry of Coal has allocated three coal blocks to NLC Limited, two coal blocks in Odisha ( Talabira II and III) and one in Jharkhand through the preferential allocation dispensation for government companies. After bagging new coal blocks, NLC has abandoned plans to acquire overseas coal assets.

Earlier, NLC was interested in acquiring high-grade coal assets in Australia, Indonesia and Mozambique to feed its new and expanded power capacities, as its existing production of lignite was of low grade and not suitable to achieve optimal efficiencies from power plants.

The newly allocated coal blocks will help NLC Limited to fulfil its coal needs for future thermal power plants and also for merchant sales to other power utilities.

Present Power Generation Capacity of the company (including JVs) is 4293.5 MW.

The coal miner cum power generator plans to increase its thermal power generation capacity to 11 200 MW by 2020.
