India: Pellet Exports Increase Tenfold in FY17

Indian pellet exports have grown by 893% in FY17 with 8.26 MnT pellets against 0.83 MnT exports in FY16.

Though the exports were down 4% M-o-M with 0.75 MnT material against 0.78 MnT in Feb’17 it increased by whopping 16 times Y-o-Y compared to the same month previous fiscal.

JSPL remains the largest pellet exporter in FY17. Increased global iron ore prices post Chinese New Year holiday have speed up the pellet exports from India lately. Iron ore exports from India have more than tripled in FY17. India has exported 14.23 MnT iron ore in 11 months till Feb-17 compared with 6 MnT in FY16 which is 236% higher this year.East India pellet makers continue to export pellets to China: East Coast pellet exporters continue to export pellets to China. Paradip 4.39 MnT with 53% share of total exports, Dhamra with 2.05 MnT material with 25% share followed by Mangalore and Haldia are the chief exporting ports. China is still the largest destination for Indian pellets exports.

JSPL- Exported 2.29 MnT in FY17: Jindal Steel & Power (JSPL) has exported 2.29 MnT pellets in FY17. It is to be noted that JSPL pellet exports in FY16 remained nil.

BRPL exported 1.77 MnT in FY17: BRPL- the second largest pellet exporter has exported 1.77 MnT pellets during in FY17. The pellet maker exported only 48,000 MT in FY16.
Essar Steel, has exported 1.37 MnT followed by Rashmi Metaliks (1.01 MnT), KIOCL (0.92 MnT) Bagadiya Brothers (0.51 MnT), Arya Iron & Steel (0.32 MnT).

China- the largest export destination from India: India exported 7.32 MnT iron ore to China which consists of around 89% share of total pellet exports from India. The other countries material was exported to are Oman around 6%, Japan 2%, Iran 1% and UAE 1%.India Pellet Imports: Indian pellet imports were at 0.34 MnT for FY-17 over 0.16 MnT last fiscal.  The import were little above than double the quantity in last fiscal. It should be noted that the Essar Steel was the only importer in FY17 and the only port that received the material was Port Hazira form countries Bahrain 0.23 MnT and Australia 0.11 MnT.
