Colombia Sixth-largest coal exporter in the world has increased its coal exports by 15% Y-o-Y in CY16.
The country exported 85.66 MnT coal in CY16 against 74.71 MnT in CY15, according to the data released by Colombian Customs.
Colombia is also the world’s fifth largest producer of coal, which recorded an output of 90.9 MnT last year, the highest figure in its history despite price instability.
Colombia is expected to produce at least 95 MnT of coal in 2017; the Mining Minister of the country has revealed recently. However, the production level will be behind the target fixed initially at 102 MnT.
Grade-wise Coal Exports:
Colombia mainly exports Steaming coal which accounts for more than 90% of the country’s total exports. Other commodities include small quantities of Coke, Coking coal, Pet coke, Briquettes, ovoids and similar solid fuels.
Steaming coal exports rose by 15%Y-o-Y to 82.12 MnT in CY16. While yearly exports of Coke and Coking coal fell by 7% and 15% respectively.

Quantities in MnT
Major Importing Countries:
Turkey remained the top coal importer from Colombia in CY 16, followed by Netherlands, USA, Brazil, Spain and Israel.
Turkey imported 15.76 MnT coal in CY16. Imports increased by 40% Y-o-Y compared with 11.24 MnT in CY15.
Netherlands second-largest coal importer received 13.56 MnT in CY 16 against 13.11 MnT in CY15.
USA third largest coal importer also witnessed an increase in the yearly imports by 7% to 7.58 MnT in CY16.
Among the other major coal importers Brazil, Spain, Israel and Portugal saw fall in their yearly coal imports while imports from Chile, Korea, Italy and India rose over the year.
