Germany yearly coal imports fell in spite of rise in monthly imports.
Germany Coal imports fell by 7% Y-o-Y to 56.47 MnT in CY16 in comparison with 60.52 MnT in CY15, as per preliminary data released by German Customs.
Monthly coal imports, however, have risen by 6% to 4.84 MnT in Dec’16.

Grade-wise Coal Imports:
Coal is still the backbone of power generation in Germany, which is seeking to move away from nuclear and fossil power to renewable energy.
About Two-thirds of German coal imports go to power utilities, less than one-third to the steel sector, and the remainder to heating providers.
In CY16, Germany imported 24.79 MnT Bituminous coal, 12.17 MnT Coking coal, and rest of the quantity includes Coke, Pet coke, Anthracite and other grades of coal. Imports of almost all coal commodities have fallen over the year.

Major Exporting Countries:
Netherlands remained the major coal exporter in CY16, which caters about half of the coal exports to Germany. Russia, Belgium, Poland and USA were among the other major coal suppliers in CY16.
Netherlands exported 30.88 MnT coal in CY16 down by 2% Y-o-Y in comparison with 31.41 MnT in CY15.
Russian coal exports rose by 8% Y-o-Y to 10.96 MnT in CY16.
Belgium third-largest coal exporters witness fall in their yearly exports by 16% to 2.98 MnT in CY16. Likewise, exports from Poland and USA also fell by 35% and 23% respectively.
