Japan coal imports reached 17-months high since acquiring 18.59 MnT coal in July’16.
Japan, second-largest coal importers in the world, has imported 18.09 MnT coal in Jan’17. Coal imports have increased by 7% M-o-M compared with 16.88 MnT in Dec’16. Besides, yearly imports also grow by 3% against 17.63 MnT in Jan’16.
Japan Grade-wise Imports:
Japan imported Bituminous coal, Coking coal, Coke, Anthracite and Pet coke in Jan’17.
Bituminous coal share is more than 60% of the total imports in Jan’17.
Japan’s Bituminous coal imports were 12.10 MnT, followed by 3.47 MnT Coking coal, 0.47 MnT Anthracite while 1.78 MnT accounts for coke, pet coke and other grades of coal.
Imports of coking coal have declined by 13% in Jan’17 while all other grades import has shown improvement over the month.

Quantities in MnT
Major Exporting Countries:
Australia provided the major share of the total coal exports to Japan in Jan’17, followed by Indonesia, USA, Russia and Canada.
Australia caters more than 60% of the total coal needs of Japan by exporting 11.35 MnT coal. Imports have risen 16% M-o-M compared with 9.79 MnT in Dec’16. However, Yearly exports decrease by 3% in comparison with Jan’16.
Indonesia, second-largest coal exporters, supplied 3.45 MnT to Japan. Exports have increased both on the monthly and yearly basis.
USA, third largest exporters have shown major improvement in their exports to Japan. Coal exports have risen by 40% Y-o-Y to 1.10 MnT in Jan’17. Monthly exports also followed the similar trend by increasing 23% in comparison with 0.89 MnT in Dec’16.
