Indian pellet exports were registered at 6.7 MnT during Apr’16-Jan’17. The exports have registered an increase of 821% Y-o-Y as only 0.73 MnT pellet was expected during the same time period last year.
Jindal Steel & Power (JSPL), turned out to be the largest pellet exporter in FY17. Due to increased demand from China and better realization in exports, Indian pellet exports geared up.
In Jan’17, pellet exports were registered at 1.17 MnT against 0.89 MnT in Dec’16. However, on Y-o-Y basis, there is a tremendous growth as pellet exports remained at 0.11 in Jan’16.
East India pellet makers aggressively exporting pellets to China: East Coast pellet exporters are aggressively exporting pellets to China. Paradip, Dhamra and Haldia are the chief exporting ports. China has turned out to be the largest destination for Indian pellets.
Spot pellet premium at USD 21/MT: It should be noted that currently spot premium have moved down to USD 21/MT which has made Indian pellet export offers less and currently they are hovering in the range of USD 97-98/MT, CFR China.
JSPL- Exported 2.0 MnT during Apr-Jan’17: Jindal Steel & Power (JSPL) has exported 2.0 MnT pellets in FY17 during Apr’16-Jan’17. It is to be noted that JSPL pellet exports in FY16 remained nil.
BRPL exported 1.43 MnT during Apr-Jan’17: BRPL- the second largest pellet exporter has exported 1.43 MnT pellets during Apr-Jan’17. The pellet maker exported only 48,000 MT in FY16.
Essar Steel, has exported 1.20 MnT followed by KIOCL (0.80 MnT), Rashmi Metaliks (0.72 MnT), Bagadiya Brothers (0.30 MnT), Arya Iron & Steel (0.23 MnT).
China- the largest export destination from India: India exported 5.99 MnT iron ore to China which contributes around 89% of total pellet exports. On the other side, exports to Oman were around 6%, Japan 2.6%, Iran 1% and UAE 1%.
All the pellet export shipment made in the month of Jan’17 was made to China and Oman. Out of the total quantity exported in Dec’16, 1,109,910 MT (17.6%) exported to China and 39,500 MT (5%) to Oman.
