Met Coke Prices in India in Sinking Mode on Sluggish Demand

Met Coke prices in India have exhibited a varied trend, with some producers lowering their prices due to prevalence of lackluster demand, and some producers keeping their prices unchanged.

Demand has remained sluggish as buyers were adopting a wait-and-watch mode in view of the falling Coking Coal prices. Buyers speculate the prices to go down further due to the downswing in the coal prices.

Import offers have gone down further, being pulled down by the declining Coking Coal prices. The latest import offer for the 64% CSR Met Coke is reported lower at USD 280-281/MT CFR India; and that for the 62% CSR Met Coke also reported down at USD 278-279/MT CFR India.

Sellers in China have quoted these offers at: 270/MT and USD 268/MT respectively on FoB basis.

Domestic producers in the country have found it difficult to strike deals as buyers postponed buying in the prospect of seeing the prices going down to significantly low levels. Some producers have lowered their prices, while, other retained their prices.

The prevailing ex-works prices in India for the Blast Furnace grade are: INR 22,300/MT (east coast) and INR 20,000-28,000/MT(west coast).

In the meantime, Colombia is gradually emerging as a prominent region of import among Indian buyers as Anti Dumping Duty is being imposed on the imports from China and Australia. Indian buyers are thus prompted to explore alternate regions for importing.

In a communication with CoalMint, an importer revealed that Met Coke offers from Colombia were at around USD 235/MT on CFR India basis.
