India: Medium-carbon silico manganese prices edge up as supply tightens

  • Assam coke disruption tightens medium-carbon supply
  • Production cuts boost demand amid limited availability

India’s medium-carbon silico manganese (Mn 53%, Si 20%, C max 0.5%) prices edged up by INR 200/t ($2/t) w-o-w to INR 97,400/t ($1,017/t) in the week ended 22 October 2026. Disrupted Assam coke supplies and production curtailments at several manufacturing units tightened market availability, supporting prices amid cautious buying.

Coke supply disruption curbs production

Assam coke supplies have been almost halted for the past 15-20 days, according to a market participant who spoke to BigMint. With stocks running low, several manufacturers have lowered the medium-carbon silico manganese production, reducing the availability of material in the market. The disruption has constrained fresh output and created supply-side pressure, prompting sellers to raise offers. Unlike a demand-led rally, the current price increase is primarily linked to raw material availability and its impact on production.

Cautious buying limits sellers’ pricing leverage

Despite the supply-side pressure, buyers remained selective, preventing sellers from securing a sharper price increase. Producers faced a balancing act between recovering higher input costs and retaining buyer interest in a market where procurement remained need-based. This suggests the latest rise was driven more by cost and availability concerns than by a decisive improvement in downstream demand.

Outlook

Medium-carbon silico manganese prices may remain supported while Assam coke supplies remain disrupted and production stays constrained. A recovery in coke availability could ease supply pressure, while prolonged disruption may sustain upward price pressure.
