India: Small cardamom prices gain on strong demand and export enquiries

  • Domestic demand supports auction prices
  • Export order conversion remains key to sustaining the rally

India’s small cardamom market is gaining momentum on robust domestic demand and rising export enquiries, supporting auction prices and improving seller sentiment. Strong buying interest for superior-quality capsules is underpinning the market, although elevated procurement costs are prompting buyers to remain selective.

Quality premiums support auction prices

Small cardamom auctions recorded a maximum price of INR 3,640/kg, while the average price at a major auction centre stood at INR 2,622.66/kg on May 6, 2026. More than 97% of combined arrivals across two reported auction centres were sold during the reported sessions, indicating strong buying interest at prevailing prices.

These figures reflect historical auction activity and should not be interpreted as current market quotations. The high clearance rate suggests that buyers were willing to absorb available supplies during the reported sessions.

Domestic consumption and rising export enquiries are supporting demand, particularly for superior-quality capsules with attractive green colour, larger size and strong aroma. These characteristics are helping premium grades command stronger realisations than average-quality material.

However, rising prices could increase procurement costs for exporters and limit their ability to compete in international markets. Export enquiries do not necessarily translate into confirmed orders, making actual order execution a key indicator of underlying demand.

Export demand and arrivals to shape outlook

In the near term, small cardamom prices are likely to remain sensitive to auction arrivals, quality composition and domestic buying activity. Sustained demand and limited availability of premium grades could support prices, while increased arrivals or resistance from buyers may restrict further gains.

For growers, firm auction realisations could encourage sales at prevailing levels. Traders and stockists, however, need to assess inventory turnover and downstream demand before committing to higher-priced purchases.

The sustainability of the current market strength will ultimately depend on whether export enquiries convert into confirmed orders and domestic buyers continue to absorb higher prices. Auction clearances, grade-wise price movements and changes in arrivals will remain important indicators of the market’s direction.
