India: Cardamom prices remain firm; monsoon rainfall, export demand shape outlook

  • Prices remain elevated amid production concerns
  • Northeast monsoon holds key to crop recovery

India’s cardamom market remained firm on October 13, supported by prevailing domestic auction prices and concerns over crop development following deficient August rainfall. The outlook for production in Kerala’s high-range growing areas will depend on northeast monsoon rainfall, while rising exports from Guatemala could influence competition in international markets.

Auction prices remain elevated

Small cardamom average auction prices in Kerala stood at INR 3,147/kg on October 13, while premium varieties fetched around INR 3,667/kg. The prices reflect domestic auction levels in Kerala.

Firm prices have encouraged farmers to maintain fertiliser and pesticide applications to protect crop health and maximise potential returns. However, higher prices alone may not translate into increased production, as crop development remains sensitive to rainfall conditions.

Deficient August rainfall reportedly slowed plant growth and affected flowering and fruit development, raising concerns over potential output. The extent of the impact will become clearer as the crop progresses through the remaining growing period.

Northeast monsoon to determine crop recovery

Farmers in Kerala’s high-range growing areas are looking for improved rainfall during the Tula Varsha period to support plant growth and fruit development. Adequate and well-distributed rainfall could help improve crop conditions towards the end of the year.

However, the recovery will depend on the timing and distribution of rainfall and the response of plants to improved moisture availability. Continued moisture stress could constrain production, while favourable conditions may ease some supply concerns.

Guatemala export growth adds to global supply dynamics

Guatemala exported approximately 17,000 tonnes of cardamom during January–August, an increase of around 80% year on year. The rise points to greater export availability from a competing origin and adds another factor for Indian exporters to monitor.

The effect on Indian cardamom prices will depend on international demand, relative prices and the pace at which global markets absorb the additional supplies. Higher Guatemalan export volumes could intensify competition for export markets, although the scale of the impact remains uncertain without comparable trade and demand data.

Outlook

Indian cardamom prices are likely to remain supported in the near term by prevailing auction levels and uncertainty over crop development. Improved northeast monsoon rainfall could aid recovery and strengthen production prospects towards year-end, while continued moisture stress may sustain supply concerns.

Market direction will depend on rainfall distribution across Kerala’s growing areas, subsequent crop development and international demand amid higher Guatemalan export volumes.
