China: Ferro chrome prices remain stable despite weak market sentiment

  • Lower steel mill bids, weaker raw material costs weigh on prices
  • High smelting costs, potential production cuts may limit further downside

Chinese ferro chrome prices remained largely stable w-o-w on 14 October 2026 following the Golden Week holiday break. High-carbon ferro chrome (Cr: 50%, C: 6-8%) was assessed at RMB 7,790-8,000/t ($1,164-1,195/t), while medium-carbon ferro chrome (Cr: 60%, C: 1%) stood at RMB 12,200-12,900/t ($1,823-1,928/t). Low-carbon ferro chrome (Cr: 60%, C: 0.1%) prices were assessed at RMB 14,100-14,400/t ($2,107-2,152/t).

Market updates

Lower steel mill bids weigh on prices: China’s ferro chrome market remained under pressure as leading steel mills reduced procurement bids, weakening spot market confidence. Some stainless steel producers have also cut output, while cautious purchasing and high inventories continued to limit demand. Transactions remained sluggish, with buyers largely focusing on immediate requirements.

Weakening raw material costs reduce support: Chrome ore prices remained under pressure amid slower-than-expected inventory drawdowns at ports and limited strength in overseas markets. Softer coking coal prices also weakened cost support for ferro chrome producers. However, elevated smelting costs and potential production cuts could limit further price declines.

Outlook

Chinese ferro chrome prices are likely to remain weak in the near term, with subdued stainless steel demand and lower raw material costs weighing on the market. However, potential smelter production cuts may limit downside.
