Baltic Dry Index dips 0.3% d-o-d as Capesize falls to over 1-month low

  • Capesize leads downside, while Panamax and Supramax edge higher
  • BDI falls for third straight session to its lowest level since late August

The Baltic Dry Index (BDI) declined by 8 points, or 0.27%, to 2,994 on 8 October, from 3,002 on 7 October. The decline marked a third consecutive session of losses, with the index falling to its lowest level since late August. The weakness was primarily driven by another decline in Capesize freight rates, while Panamax and Supramax posted modest gains.

Segment-wise performance

  • Capesize declines further: The Baltic Capesize Index (BCI) fell by 42 points, or 0.91%, to 4,596, from 4,638. The index reached its lowest level since 21 August, reflecting continued pressure on larger vessel freight sentiment amid softer cargo activity and increasing tonnage availability.
  • Panamax edges higher: The Baltic Panamax Index (BPI) increased by 19 points, or 0.80%, to 2,385, from 2,366. The recovery indicates relatively firmer sentiment in the Panamax market, potentially supported by improved coal and grain cargo enquiries.
  • Supramax gains marginally: The Baltic Supramax Index (BSI) rose by 5 points, or 0.28%, to 1,800, from 1,795. The segment remained comparatively resilient, with minor-bulk demand providing some support despite weakness in the larger vessel classes.

Outlook

The BDI is likely to remain under pressure in the near term, with Capesize performance continuing to dictate overall dry bulk sentiment. Developments in iron ore cargo flows, Chinese buying activity, vessel availability and fixing volumes will remain key indicators. Panamax and Supramax rates may find support from coal, grain and minor-bulk demand, although ample tonnage and uneven cargo enquiries could limit the upside.
