Baltic Dry Index rises as Capesize freight rates rebound

  • Capesize rises, while Panamax and Supramax edge lower
  • BDI gains 1.1% after a sharp weekly decline

The Baltic Dry Index (BDI) rose by 35 points, or 1.12%, to 3,148 on 2 October, from 3,113 on 30 September. The increase was largely supported by a recovery in Capesize freight rates, which more than offset marginal declines across the Panamax and Supramax segments.

The Capesize segment provided the main upward momentum, indicating firmer demand for larger bulk carriers, particularly those typically used for iron ore and coal transportation. In contrast, softer Panamax and Supramax rates suggest relatively weaker conditions in the smaller vessel segments.

Segment-wise performance

  • Capesize rebounds: The Baltic Capesize Index (BCI) rose by 114 points, or 2.31%, to 5,042 on 2 October, from 4,928 30 September. The recovery followed recent weakness in the larger-vessel segment, supported by improved freight sentiment and renewed activity in the Capesize market.
  • Panamax edges lower: The Baltic Panamax Index (BPI) declined by 12 points, or 0.50%, to 2,372, from 2,384. The marginal decline indicates relatively softer conditions, with coal and grain cargo demand yet to provide sufficient momentum to lift rates.
  • Supramax slips marginally: The Baltic Supramax Index (BSI) decreased by 8 points, or 0.45%, to 1,789, from 1,797. The segment remained comparatively stable despite the broader volatility in dry bulk freight markets.

Outlook

The BDI may remain volatile in the near term, with Capesize performance likely to remain the key driver of overall market direction. Developments in iron ore cargo availability, vessel-fixing activity and Chinese demand will be closely watched for further direction. Meanwhile, Panamax and Supramax markets may find support from coal, grain and minor-bulk demand, although ample vessel availability could limit significant rate gains.
