Baltic Dry Index declines by over 1% d-o-d amid Capesize correction

  • Capesize index falls sharply by nearly 3% on weaker activity
  • Panamax, Supramax edge higher, limiting overall decline

The Baltic Dry Index (BDI) fell 47 points, or 1.35%, d-o-d to 3,426 on 25 September, from 3,473 on 24 September. The decline was driven by a sharp correction in the Capesize segment, while Panamax and Supramax posted modest gains.

Baltic Dry Index sentiment turned slightly weaker at the close of the week, primarily due to pressure in the larger-vessel segment. Capesize rates declined amid softer fixing activity, while Panamax and Supramax remained supported by steady cargo demand. Despite the d-o-d drop, the BDI remained 1.6% higher w-o-w, indicating relatively firm weekly sentiment.

Segment-wise performance

  • Capesize declines: The Baltic Capesize Index (BCI) fell 155 points, or 2.61%, d-o-d to 5,784 on 25 September, from 5,939 on 24 September. The decline reflected weaker activity in the larger-vessel market and a moderation in fixing momentum.
  • Panamax gains: The Baltic Panamax Index (BPI) increased 25 points, or 1.05%, to 2,407 on 25 September, from 2,382 on 24 September. Firmer cargo enquiries and steady fixing activity provided support to the segment.
  • Supramax edges higher: The Baltic Supramax Index (BSI) rose 4 points, or 0.22%, to 1,786 on 25 September, from 1,782 on 24 September. The marginal gain reflected relatively balanced demand and vessel availability.

Outlook

The BDI may see near-term consolidation following the recent rally, with Capesize performance likely to remain the key driver. Sustained Panamax and Supramax activity could provide some support, while softer Capesize fixing may limit further upside in the broader index.
