Baltic Dry Index rises modestly d-o-d as active fixing lifts Capesize, Supramax rates

  • Capesize leads recovery with 0.4% d-o-d gain
  • Panamax extends decline for 3rd straight session

The Baltic Dry Index (BDI) rose by 9 points (0.3%) d-o-d to 3,584 on 8 September 2026, from 3,575 on 7 September. The recovery was supported by gains in Capesize and Supramax indices, while continued weakness in Panamax limited the overall increase.

The modest rebound in the BDI suggests that dry bulk freight sentiment remains broadly firm despite some consolidation at elevated levels. Capesize’s recovery indicates renewed strength in the larger vessel segment following the previous day’s correction, while Supramax continued to show resilience. However, the continued decline in Panamax rates points to uneven momentum across vessel segments.

Segment-wise performance

  • Baltic Capesize Index (BCI): The Capesize index increased by 27 points (0.4%) to 6,313, from 6,286. The rebound partially reversed the previous session’s decline, suggesting that the recent correction in the segment may be stabilising.
  • Baltic Panamax Index (BPI): The Panamax index fell by 17 points (0.7%) d-o-d to 2,414, from 2,431, extending its decline for a third consecutive session. Continued weakness in the segment remains a drag on the broader BDI.
  • Baltic Supramax Index (BSI): The Supramax index rose by 11 points (0.7%) d-o-d to 1,693, from 1,682, marking the strongest percentage gain among the tracked segments. The continued upward movement highlights relatively firm conditions in the smaller vessel market.

Outlook

The BDI is likely to remain elevated but volatile in the near term, with Capesize performance remaining the key driver. A sustained recovery in Capesize rates could support another leg higher, while continued Panamax weakness may limit broader gains. Firm commodity flows and resilient Supramax demand could provide a floor to the market, keeping the BDI supported through September.
