Bangladesh: Aromatic rice prices nearly double in Rajshahi amid tight supply

  • 1,530 t exported by three major companies in FY2025-26
  • BRRI-34 (Chinigura) accounts for major share of aromatic rice production

Aromatic rice prices in Rajshahi have nearly doubled over the past six months, with wholesale prices rising to BDT 180-200/kg from around BDT 100/kg, as lower production, stockpiling by large millers, export demand and higher processing and transportation costs tighten market supply. Traders attributed the sharp increase mainly to higher export demand, while other market participants cited reduced production and early procurement by large rice processors as key factors behind the supply pressure.

Exports add pressure on domestic supply

Three major companies exported a combined 1,530 t of rice during the 2025-26 fiscal year. Traders said increased exports have contributed to tighter availability of aromatic rice in the domestic market. A significant share of Bangladesh’s aromatic rice is produced from BRRI-34, commonly known as Chinigura paddy. Rice currently available in the market is largely sourced from paddy harvested during the last Aman season.

Lower supply and higher processing costs

Aromatic paddy production was hit by severe heatwaves and inadequate rainfall in parts of northern Bangladesh, reducing yields. Meanwhile, large rice processors purchased paddy at relatively high prices early in the season and built stocks, limiting availability for smaller mills and the open market. Higher electricity, milling, processing and transportation costs have further increased the cost of producing and distributing aromatic rice.

Rajshahi market prices

In Saheb Bazar, Rajshahi, open Chinigura rice is currently selling at Tk140-145/kg, compared with Tk115-120/kg previously. Packaged Chinigura from leading brands has increased to Tk160-170/kg from Tk135-140/kg. Kalijira rice prices have risen to around Tk150/kg from Tk120-125/kg, while Kataribhog rice from Dinajpur is currently priced at Tk95-105/kg, around Tk15 higher than previously.

Outlook

Aromatic rice prices in Rajshahi are likely to remain firm in the near term, supported by lower production, limited market availability, stocks held by large processors and continued export demand. Elevated electricity, processing and transportation costs are also expected to keep prices high. However, weaker consumer demand at current price levels could limit further price gains.
