- Capesize strengthens sharply amid weather disruptions, firmer freight sentiment
- Panamax gains further, while Supramax remains broadly stable
The Baltic Dry Index (BDI) strengthened on 26 August, rising for the fifth consecutive session by 130 points (4.4%) d-o-d to 3,056, from 2,926 on 25 August. The index also reached its highest level since 10 August, with the advance led by a sharp rise in Capesize, while Panamax extended its recovery and Supramax remained largely stable.
The broad-based improvement reflects firmer freight sentiment across the larger vessel segments. Capesize rates recorded the strongest gains, supported by disruptions to shipping routes in the South China Sea following Typhoon Narra, which tightened vessel availability and contributed to higher freight costs. Panamax also strengthened, while limited movement in Supramax kept the overall rally concentrated in the larger segments.
Segment-wise performance
- Baltic Capesize Index (BCI): The index rose by 298 points (6.3%) d-o-d to 5,033 from 4,735, marking a fifth consecutive session of gains and its highest level since 10 August. Gains were supported by firmer freight sentiment and weather-related disruptions in the South China Sea, which tightened shipping availability and lifted freight costs.
- Baltic Panamax Index (BPI): The index increased by 80 points (3.7%) d-o-d to 2,246 from 2,166, reaching its highest level since 13 August. The hike reflects continued improvement in Panamax market conditions and broader recovery in freight demand.
- Baltic Supramax Index (BSI): The index edged up by just 1 point (0.1%) d-o-d to 1,644 from 1,643, remaining broadly stable. The limited movement indicates comparatively muted momentum in the smaller vessel segment despite the broader strengthening in dry bulk freight markets.
Outlook
The BDI may remain firm in the near term, supported by sustained Capesize momentum, improving Panamax rates, and weather-related disruptions affecting vessel movements in the South China Sea. However, the durability of the rally will depend on cargo enquiry, vessel availability, and chartering activity across key routes. Supramax performance also remains a key factor in determining whether the broader recovery can become more balanced.
