- Capesize momentum and Panamax recovery lift BDI
- Supramax slips slightly after recent resilience
The Baltic Dry Index (BDI) extended its upward momentum on 24 August, rising 41 points (1.4%) w-o-w to 2,882 from 2,841 on 21 August. The weekly gain was driven by stronger Capesize and Panamax freight rates, while a marginal decline in Supramax limited the overall upside.
The latest movement points to improving sentiment in the larger vessel segments, with Capesize maintaining firm momentum and Panamax recovering from recent weakness. Supramax, however, witnessed a slight correction after holding relatively firm in previous sessions.
Segment-wise performance
- Baltic Capesize Index (BCI): Rose by 91 points (2%) w-o-w to 4,643 from 4,552. The continued strength in the larger vessel segment provided the biggest boost to the overall BDI.
- Baltic Panamax Index (BPI): Increased by 23 points (1.1%) to 2,131 from 2,108, signalling a modest recovery after recent pressure and adding support to broader dry bulk sentiment.
- Baltic Supramax Index (BSI): Eased by 6 points (0.4%) to 1,641 from 1,647. Despite the slight decline, the smaller vessel segment continued to hold at relatively elevated levels compared to recent weeks.
Outlook
The BDI is likely to remain supported in the near term if Capesize momentum continues and Panamax sustains its recovery. However, the pace of gains could remain measured as Supramax softens and market sentiment continues to depend on cargo enquiries, vessel availability, and chartering activity across key trade routes.
