South Eastern Coalfields Limited (SECL), the largest subsidiary of Coal India Limited (CIL), has recently apprised the Parliamentary Standing Committee on steel and coal that delays in land acquisition and obtaining forest as well as environmental clearances were posing as grave hindrances in its mining operations.
SECL had failed to start its new mining projects at the Jagannathpur open cast mine, Rampur Batura open cast mine and Ketki underground mine due to delay in environment and forest clearances, the company said to the committee. Moreover, environmental clearance to the Dipka and Gevra projects, SECL applied for, has not yet been granted.
SECL operates 86 mines in the country, out of which 52 are situated in Chhattisgarh and the rest in Madhya Pradesh. Also, out of the 86 mine, 62 are underground,23 are open cast, and 1 is mixed.
Apart from hindrances posed by the delays, marketing of high grade coal of underground mines, and coal evacuation from the Mand-Rajgarh coalfield have been posing challenges, SECL told the committee.
