India: Zinc fine ash auction offers fresh price cue at Raipur

  • Auction level remains well below zinc dross and oxide
  • Recoverable zinc content and processing economics remain key to valuation

A 30 t lot of fine zinc ash was confirmed at INR 143,100/t ex-Raipur on August 19, following an auction conducted on August 13. The lot carries a ±25% tolerance, implying a potential volume range of 22.5-37.5 t.

The material was described as fine zinc ash processed through a pulverizer for zinc recovery and was procured by an established Gujarat-based secondary metals and recycling player.

Price comparison

The auction level was significantly below BigMint’s August 19 assessments for zinc dross at INR 337,800/t and zinc oxide at INR 325,800/t in Delhi. The fine zinc ash transaction was around 58% below dross and 56% below oxide, highlighting the valuation gap between lower-grade zinc residues and more processed materials.

Market implications

The transaction provides a fresh price cue for fine zinc ash, but should not be treated as a benchmark for the broader zinc dross or oxide markets. Zinc content, recoverability, impurities, recovery yield, particle size and processing costs remain key factors in determining transaction values.

The transaction comes amid firm primary zinc prices, with LME zinc around $3,719/t and MCX zinc at INR 398,900/t on August 19. Elevated zinc prices may support interest in lower-grade residues, although recovery economics remain critical.

Outlook

Buyers are likely to continue evaluating zinc-bearing residues for recoverable metal, with transaction levels remaining highly dependent on material quality and processing economics.
