- Kandla offers fall to over one-year low
- Regional buying supports Jalna, Raipur markets
Mill scale prices across major Indian markets remained largely firm during the week ended 19 August, although buying activity varied across regions. BigMint’s Fe 69% mill scale assessment at Kandla declined by INR 150/t w-o-w to INR 7,150/t DAP Kandla on 19 August, while Jalna and Raipur assessments remained unchanged at INR 6,450/t and INR 7,200/t ex-works, respectively. Weak export demand and monsoon-related disruptions limited buying in some markets, while bulk procurement and steady trader activity provided support elsewhere.
Kandla market weakens
Kandla-origin mill scale prices came under pressure as exporters lowered offers amid subdued buying interest and accumulated inventories. Offers were reported at INR 7,000-7,200/t DAP Kandla, with the lower end marking the lowest level in more than a year, last seen around July 2025.
Jalna-origin material remained unviable at Kandla because of higher freight costs. As a result, exporters increased sourcing from Mandi and nearby regions. Around 2,000 t of mill scale were traded at INR 7,000/t DAP Kandla during the assessment period.
Raipur sees buyer-seller price gap
Raipur mill scale prices remained stable to mixed as sellers maintained higher offers, while buyers from outside the region continued to quote lower levels. The gap between bids and offers limited trading viability, with participants unable to secure material at higher prices and resell it competitively.
Monsoon-related moisture content also remained a consideration for buyers, who factored in additional moisture risks while evaluating material. Despite continued buying interest, limited availability at prevailing prices kept participants cautious.
Around 2,050 t were traded at INR 6,750-7,100/t ex-works Raipur during the assessment period. A trader said, “Prices may increase in the coming days.”
Jalna remains supported
Jalna remained comparatively firm as Wardha- and Bhandara-based buyers placed need-based orders. Around 3,000-5,000 t of mill scale were reportedly traded during the assessment period.
Some raw-material tightness and higher scrap and input costs supported procurement. Market participants considered INR 6,400-6,600/t ex-works workable levels, while around 3,000 t were reportedly traded at INR 6,400-6,500/t ex-works.
