- India’s rice rake movement reached 0.3 MnT led by Karnataka, Gujarat and Tamil Nadu.
- FCI-driven movement remained strong, with rice moving mainly from surplus states to consuming regions.
Rice movement across India remained active during the week, with total tracked rice rake movement reaching 0.3 MnT as of August 13, according to BigMint data. The movement was largely driven by FCI-linked supplies, with major volumes moving from northern and central surplus states towards southern, western and northeastern markets.
Karnataka records highest rice inflow
Karnataka emerged as the largest destination, receiving 60,657 MT, with rakes originating from Telangana, Punjab, Chhattisgarh and Haryana. The movement was primarily linked to FCI supplies. Gujarat followed with 43,352 MT, sourced mainly from Punjab, Haryana and Madhya Pradesh, involving FCI and Sai Hanumant Industries. Tamil Nadu recorded inflows of 41,653 MT, with supplies originating from Tamil Nadu, Telangana, Bihar and Chhattisgarh. FCI and Shri Laxmi Trading were among the key consignors/consignees. Andhra Pradesh received 38,634 MT, mainly from Chhattisgarh and Maharashtra. The movement involved several private trade participants, including A.S. Associates, Sai Hanumant, Bhagwati Agri, Bebo Agri, Bhagwati Industries, LDC, Bharti Foods and Sagar Industries.
Northern rice movement supports multiple consuming regions
Uttar Pradesh received 31,332 MT, mainly from Punjab, Haryana and Uttarakhand, while Assam recorded 31,030 MT, with supplies largely originating from Punjab, Haryana, Delhi and Uttar Pradesh. Bihar received 25,565 MT, with inflows from Punjab, Odisha, Haryana and within Bihar. Meanwhile, Maharashtra recorded 12,902 MT, sourced from Chhattisgarh, Telangana and Haryana.
Northeastern movement remains significant
Rice movement towards the northeastern region remained notable during the week. Jammu and Kashmir received 10,499 MT, mainly from Punjab, Haryana and Delhi, while Tripura and Manipur received 6,447 MT and 5,223 MT, respectively, largely from Punjab. Arunachal Pradesh recorded a smaller inflow of 982 MT, also sourced from Punjab.
Outlook
FCI-led rake movement indicates continued government support to rice availability, particularly in southern markets such as Karnataka, Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh. Going forward, FCI dispatches and regional demand will remain key drivers, while higher supplies from Punjab, Haryana and Chhattisgarh could keep consumer-market availability comfortable.
